CTS Delivers the Euros this Summer via Cloud Video Platform
As the 2024 UEFA European Championship (the Euros) heads into the halfway point of the tournament, CTS’s Streaming, Broadcast and Advertising (SB&A) team is getting in on the action with innovative infrastructure contributions and revolutionizing the way viewers experience and engage with the competition.
The team is elevating the Euros to new heights through their partnership with Deutsche Telekom (DT) by sourcing and providing the platform for television consumption across many countries in Europe via the Cloud Video Platform (CVP).
When it pertains to soccer/futbol, there will be millions of eyes on the Euros: 51 matches, all hosted in Germany at various venues and several games that will be exclusive to DT from June 14 until July 14.
“One of CTS’s key customer’s is Deutsche Telekom, a large provider in Europe, and its flagship country is in Germany,” said Bill Calton, VP, Global Operations, SB&A. “Our mission is connecting Comcast technology to the world, which means connecting people to the content they love, and nothing epitomizes that more than live sports.”
The CVP simplifies the management, monetization and publishing of video to any device, any destination and from anywhere. The CVP enables flexible monetization and optimizes workflows and the distribution of video on demand (VOD), live events, linear channels and syndication.
“We’ve covered other high-profile events, champions league and various other soccer-focused leagues, but nothing as big as this. This is almost like hosting a Super Bowl,” Bill explained.
Bill also mentioned how successfully completing this event will demonstrate to the global market that the system is capable of handling unprecedented scale.
“Being able to support an event at this level takes a lot of capabilities operationally and from an engineering standpoint. It will put a lot of wind in the sails of our teams in the US, Europe and Chennai to be able to prepare and execute this flawlessly. Also, being able to partner with Stephanie Trotter, SVP, Cloud Technologies, and her team was key.
They managed all the key infrastructure and data centers that underlies these efforts,” he shared.

For decades, Comcast Technology Solutions has been an established market leader providing Managed Channel Origination for hundreds of channels from its facilities in the U.S. to serve North American audiences. Last year, the company extended its MCO capabilities to EMEA by leveraging Sky’s master control video and metadata platforms coupled with Comcast Technology Solutions’ portfolio of product solutions.
Managed Channel Origination provides media companies with a unified workflow, from content acquisition through delivery, with 24x7 service level agreements (SLAs). It provides the capabilities needed to acquire, prepare, create, package, and deliver linear TV and OTT channels. Content is acquired either as live video or file-based acquisition via satellite, fiber, or secure IP. Channels are then prepared with Comcast Technology Solutions’ rendering operations, cloud-based content supply chain implementation, media asset management, and traffic and metadata services. Next, channels are created with capabilities such as channel automation playout (e.g., SCTE triggers, advanced graphics, closed captioning, and more), master control, and VideoAI™. From there, channels are prepared with the necessary encoding, encryption, and authorization policies, then delivered via satellite uplink, fiber, secure internet, or CDNs for MVPDs, vMVPDs, and OTT to any screen. Managed Channel Origination’s redundant and diverse IP routing infrastructure provides a secure global playout solution to accelerate delivery.
Managed Channel Origination is part of Comcast Technology Solutions’ comprehensive Live Linear Suite, and can also be coupled and integrated with additional services from Comcast Technology Solutions’ broad portfolio, including Cloud TV Suite, AdFusion, and more.

Employees Are Your Biggest Cybersecurity Threat
Paul Kivikink, vice president of product and alliances at Comcast Technology Solutions, DataBee, says assessing cybersecurity risks presented by third parties presents an ongoing effort.
“Thankfully, in most enterprise organizations, assessing the security hygiene of a third party has become standard practice and part of doing normal business. Where this needs to evolve is moving from assessing a third party’s risk at a single point in time to a more continuous model to managing risk. There’s no doubt this is a hard problem, and there are more automated technologies that are bridging this gap. But as we’ve seen in many breaches, the additional human element of managing risks from contractors, partners and vendors continues to be a multi-faced challenge for many organizations,” Kivikink says.

Rogers to bring world-class Comcast and Xfinity products to Canada
New research finds majority of Canadians say the number of streaming services and apps is overwhelming
New entertainment service will simplify the viewing experience onto one platform
Company to introduce 10G internet for seamless and reliable connectivity
TORONTO – April 24, 2024 - Rogers
Communications announced today a 10-year agreement with Comcast to bring the latest award-winning Xfinity products and technology to Canadians across the country. Soon, Rogers [xx] millions of customers will be able to experience the future of entertainment with a new device powered by Entertainment OS, the next generation of connectivity via the best gateways and devices, as well as an expanded suite of home security products and features all developed by Comcast and Xfinity.
“Our partnership with Comcast builds on our legacy of bringing Canadians the best networks, entertainment and services in the world,” said Tony Staffieri, President and CEO, Rogers Communications. “Canadians want to be connected to the best entertainment, anywhere, without interruption and we’re proud to partner with Comcast to make this a reality.”
Comcast is a global media and technology company that offers a world-class suite of connectivity and platform products to millions of customers worldwide including in the United States under the Xfinity brand. As part of the agreement, the latest broadband, smart home and connectivity products available to Xfinity customers will be coming to Canada through Rogers starting later this year.
"As a world leader in converged experiences inside and outside the home, this platform will make it easy and simple for Rogers’ customers to connect to what they love with a seamless experience, whether on the big screen in their home or their smartphone on the go,” added Staffieri.
"Building on our nearly decade-long partnership with Rogers, we’re thrilled to deliver the next-generation of our incredible entertainment and connectivity products, like Entertainment OS and the latest gateways, to millions of customers across Canada,” said Dave Watson, Chief Executive Officer of Connectivity and Platforms, Comcast. “Now, with the addition of these new products and services, even more customers in North America will be able to take advantage of Comcast and Xfinity’s innovative technologies.”
The average Canadian subscribes to nearly twice as many streaming apps than five years ago and broadband data usage at Rogers has grown 200% in the same period. New research commissioned by Rogers shows that the majority of Canadians (55%) say the number of streaming apps is overwhelming with approximately half saying (50%) searching for this content is time-consuming and admit they sometimes can’t find the show or sporting event they want to watch. The study also found accessing all streaming apps on one platform is the most appealing TV feature.
Today’s announcement underscores Rogers’ commitment to ensuring Canadians have the best networks, the best content and the best experiences. Below is an overview of the offerings:
World Class Entertainment
Rogers’ customers will soon be able to enjoy the next generation of entertainment, with Entertainment OS. This platform will bring live sports, entertainment and news, on-demand, and streaming apps into one, simple view so customers spend more time watching and less time searching with the award-winning voice remote and integrated interface.
10G Internet
Simply put, Rogers is investing to deliver the best internet experience, so customers can post, stream, game and take video calls all at the same time. Through this agreement, Rogers will offer its customers the latest gateways developed by Comcast, enabling them to experience 10G technologies, like multi-gigabit speeds, ultra-low lag and even better reliability. This will deliver truly converged and seamless experiences between WiFi and wireless, and between devices and apps.
Reliable Internet
Rogers will be the first internet provider in Canada to offer a product designed to maintain connectivity when a storm hits, trees are down, or a customer experiences a local outage. Dubbed Storm-Ready WiFi to Xfinity customers in the U.S., the product was recently lauded as one of the most innovative of the year by Fast Company. The device is equipped with cellular backup and a rechargeable battery to keep customers up and running for hours. When the power goes out, the customer’s network automatically transitions to cellular back-up so they can continue to use of the Internet. The device also doubles as a WiFi extender to deliver a strong WiFi signal to those hard-to-reach corners of the home.
Innovative Smart Home Technology
Building on the existing Self Protect service available to Rogers’ customers, Rogers will soon launch new home security hardware, including sensors, to complement the existing options of cameras and doorbells, with the added benefit of on-demand emergency dispatch at the touch of button.
Commercial details will be announced as products and services are made available, starting later this year.
Today’s announcement builds on Rogers’ commitment to bring the best innovations from around the world to Canadians. Rogers is partnering with SpaceX and Lynk Global to bring satellite-to-phone coverage nation-wide to ensure Canadians stay connected in areas beyond the limits of traditional wireless networks. Rogers plans to launch satellite-to-mobile phone technology in 2024, starting with SMS texting, mass notifications and machine-to-machine AI applications, and then expand the service to include voice and data services.
