How Does VoIP Work?

When you make a call, VoIP technology converts your voice into a digital signal which is then converted back into recognizable speech on the receiving end. Calls can be performed directly from a regular phone (adapter needed), a VoIP-specific phone, or directly from a computer.

Because all of the data is sent over an IP network, information is stored in the cloud and settings can be easily adjusted through dashboards or applications. VoIP has proven its worth as a high-quality, feature-rich voice solution that reduces complexity and expense from initial deployment to daily operations.

Advantages of VoIP

Accessible - One of the biggest advantages of using VoIP is that calls can be made from almost anywhere provided you have an internet connection and the appropriate hardware.

Cost - VoIP systems are usually less expensive to set up and maintain than traditional phone networks and it is possible to further reduce overall costs as companies may be able to avoid paying for a traditional broadband phone line.

Bandwidth - Because of the many protocols working together, VoIP is limited only by bandwidth rather than the number of phone lines in a traditional phone system. This allows for significantly more connections.

Disadvantages of VoIP

Internet Connection - Because calls are placed over the internet, if service is spotty, VoIP can have issues. This can cause you to have no signal at all or lead to problems with call quality and latency including lag, delay, and dropped calls.

Power - If power fails, then the internet fails. Without a connection to the internet, VoIP will not work and the entire system will be down. Many businesses will have a backup power supply available when using VoIP services.
